Forestry activities

The Department of Forestry and Protection of the State Environmental Research Institution "Polesie State Radiation-Ecological Reserve" plans and implements a complex of forestry, security, fire-prevention and forest protection measures aimed at preventing the transfer of radionuclides outside the contaminated zones.

Reforestation, afforestation, protection of the territory from fires, the fight against poaching and illegal logging, protection of plantations from phyto - and entropic pests, forest management, registration of wild animals and biotechnical measures for the Polesie bison population are the areas in which 16 forestries operate, security sector, ranger service, 3 fire-chemical stations with a total staff of more than 410 people.

The area of the reserve's forest fund is 216.9 thousand hectares, of which 139.6 thousand hectares are covered with forest. Most of its territory is concentrated in the zone of over 40 Ku / km2 (60%) and is represented by young stands and middle-aged stands, among which artificially created pine stands dominate. The share of mature plantations in the economic sections of the main forest-forming species does not exceed 4%. The main species for which forest management in the Polesie State Radiation-Ecological Reserve is oriented is pine (43% of the forested area). Its plantations have a clean composition, high density, and no thinning has been carried out in them, which poses a serious fire hazard and is an object of settlement by diseases and pests. On 44% of the areas where this breed grows, it is possible to carry out non-clear cuttings for intermediate use, on the rest of the area, due to strong radioactive contamination, only forest pathological observation is possible.

The area of the forestry fund of the Polesie State Radiation and Ecological Reserve, on which the forestry management is planning to carry out forestry works, is 3.1 thousand hectares. By the efforts of the forestry, forest cultures are created annually on an area of more than 300 hectares, of which the share of hardwood is more than 30%.

The annual volume of conversion of forest plantations into the category of valuable tree plantations is 310 hectares. These plantings are scientific and experimental objects, since they were created by their own planting material, for which the harvesting of seeds of coniferous species - 100 kg, deciduous - 120 kg, oak acorn - 2500 kg, and 1 hectare of forest nurseries are laid. To achieve the standard indicator of the density of forest cultures in order to transfer their plots to forested lands, 300 hectares are supplemented every year by the planting method.

Due to the prevalence of pure pine stands over the rest, special attention is paid to forest protection measures aimed at reducing the forest pathological situation by conducting current forest pathological monitoring on an area of more than 12 thousand hectares annually, soil excavations of more than 700 pits, making and hanging artificial nests and laying out hunters. trees.

Due to the radioactive contamination of the territory, felling is seasonal. When they are carried out, the priority of the radiation safety of personnel working in the forest over other aspects of forestry activities, as well as the economic and silvicultural expediency of carrying out these measures, is taken into account. The forest management of the reserve is ensured by means of intermediate felling and other felling in the stands. The annual cut-down stock is about 10 thousand m3. marketable timber corresponding to the Republican permissible levels, including business - 4 thousand m3.

Every year, the forest guards carry out work on the improvement of 89 cemeteries and 53 monuments.

The implementation of the protection and use of animals equated to hunting and commercial species and species listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Belarus is entrusted to the gamekeeper service. The importance of the work of this department is increasing from year to year. It is conditioned by the great attention of the State to the development of biodiversity issues. The coordinator of the work of the ranger service is the scientific department of fauna ecology, which made it possible, on a scientific basis, to organize biotechnical activities of the Polesye bison population, to put on a qualitative basis the conduct of animal counts and measures for the prevention of rabies and epizootics. The subdivision is entrusted with the tasks in the implementation of monitoring programs for the state of Polesie micropopulation of bison, as well as the Action Plan for the conservation and rational use of bison.
